GETTING TO AYODHYA

How to Reach Ayodhya: By Train, Flight or Road

Ayodhya has its own railway junction and an international airport, and it’s an easy drive from Lucknow. Here’s the simplest way in from wherever you’re starting.

Reaching Ayodhya by Train

The easiest and most popular way in, especially for families.

By AirBy RoadFrom DelhiFrom LucknowFrom Varanasi

  • Ayodhya Dham Junction (AY) is the main station, closest to Ram Mandir and the ghats.
  • Ayodhya Cantt (AYC), the old Faizabad Junction, is about 10 km away. Some trains stop only here.
  • Vande Bharat trains connect Ayodhya with Delhi (to Ayodhya Cantt), Lucknow and Varanasi.
  • Book early for weekends and festivals. Check both stations when you search for tickets.
  • From the station: autos and e-rickshaws wait outside. Agree the fare before you start.

Need a room at the station? See IRCTC retiring rooms.

Reaching Ayodhya by Air

Fly straight into Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhya Dham (AYJ).

  • Direct flights have connected Ayodhya with cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Chennai. Routes and frequencies change, so check the airlines for your dates.
  • The airport is a short drive from the temple area. Pre-book a cab, or take a taxi from outside the terminal.
  • No direct flight from your city? Fly to Lucknow, which has many more flights, and drive or take a train to Ayodhya. See Lucknow to Ayodhya.

Reaching Ayodhya by Road & Bus

Good highways connect Ayodhya with Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Gorakhpur.

  • Buses: UPSRTC runs regular buses from Lucknow and other UP cities to Ayodhya.
  • Taxi or own car: the most comfortable choice with elders. Parking is at designated lots outside the temple zone, and you’ll walk or take an e-rickshaw from there.
  • On festival days many roads near Ram Path and the ghats close to vehicles. Plan to park early.

Delhi to Ayodhya

Train, flight or road? Here’s how they compare for a family.

OptionGood to know
TrainOvernight trains save a hotel night. The Vande Bharat from Anand Vihar to Ayodhya Cantt is the fastest day option.
FlightQuickest, about 1.5 hours in the air when a direct flight is running.
RoadA long drive of well over 650 km. Only worth it if you’re stopping in Lucknow on the way.

Short on time? Try our weekend from Delhi plan or the Delhi to Ayodhya tour.

Lucknow to Ayodhya

About 135 km. Easy enough for a same-day darshan trip.

  • By car: roughly 2.5–3 hours. Leave by 5 AM to reach for morning darshan.
  • By train: several daily trains, including Vande Bharat services, run between Lucknow and Ayodhya.
  • By bus: frequent UPSRTC buses run through the day.

Going and coming back the same day? See the Lucknow to Ayodhya same day tour.

Varanasi to Ayodhya

Doing Kashi and Ayodhya together? Here’s the simplest way between them.

  • By train: the Vande Bharat trains take about 2.5 hours from Varanasi Junction to Ayodhya Dham Junction, and more than 20 trains run on the route.
  • By road: about 200 km, usually 4–5 hours by car.
  • Plan both cities: see the Ayodhya Varanasi 4 Days Tour or the same-day trip from Varanasi.
